Supply Side: Tight coking coal restricts coke output
Shanxi mine safety inspections remain strict in September, limiting domestic coking coal recovery. Mongolian coal clearance edges up slightly, yet low-sulfur prime coking coal stays extremely scarce, pushing raw coal costs to record highs.
National coking plant operating rate fell to only 65.02% as of Sep 6. Independent coke producers sustain heavy losses (~127 RMB/MT loss per ton), actively cutting production and holding spot cargo off the market to avoid deeper deficits.
The 5th round of coke price hike will take effect Sep 8, with wet-quenched coke lifted by 110 RMB/MT; multiple daily price adjustment notices have been issued by mills in the past two weeks.
Demand Side: Rigid steel demand supports coke procurement
The Sep golden peak season lifts steel consumption. National daily molten iron output stays stable at 2366,000 tons without large-scale blast furnace shutdowns. Both steel mill coke stock and port transit inventory hit yearly lows, passive restocking may amplify price uptrend once supply tightens further.
Key Outlook & Business Reminder
Short-term (Early Sep): Coke prices stay bullish with limited downside; all FOB/CIF offers are only valid within the same week due to daily cost fluctuations.
Mid-term turning point: Only two factors could reverse the rally — sharp rebound of Mongolian coal daily clearance or massive blast furnace maintenance across steelworks. Neither is expected within September.
